Candidate Comments on Waste Reduction

"American businesses are unrivaled in their efficiency. But, while the private sector is constantly fine tuning to run as lean as possible, our bloated and inefficient government is setting records for deficit spending. This has to stop, and I'm proud to have signed the Strong America Now Pledge."

Michele Bachmann

"Strong America Now, an organization dedicated to bringing modern management to government at every level, estimates that we can save $500 billion a year in spending through proven waste-cutting and value-enhancing techniques from the private sector, such as Lean Six Sigma. Lean Six Sigma is the most important government reform since the Civil Service Act of 1883."

Newt Gingrich
_______________________________________________________________

"Amid the din of economic nonsense being bandied about since the collapse of the housing bubble and the steep ramping up of our national debt there has been the persistent refrain that Washington should be 'run more like a business'."

Ron Paul
_______________________________________________________________

"The federal government has an obligation to tighten its belt just as American families and employers have had to do for the last three years. We've done it in Texas, and I am proud to stand by Strong America Now to take this effort to the federal level to rein in the out-of-control spending in Washington, D.C."

Rick Perry

In a November 30, 2011 ad Romney states:

"We are not going to balance the budget just by pretending that all we have to do is take out the waste."

Mitt Romney
_______________________________________________________________

"As a member of Congress I worked tirelessly to eliminate waste and abuses of taxpayer dollars, but it is time we implement the tried-and-true Lean Six Sigma method to ensure our entire government is lean and efficient. As President, I look forward to working to doing just that."

Rick Santorum

We must eliminate the $1 trillion per year deficit
2017 or face another financial crisis.

"The deficit is a here and now problem…the crisis will come in two to three years…we are going to have a rude awakening, and I believe it is coming soon!"
- David Stockman, President Reagan's Budget Director

"I've said many times that I believe the single, biggest threat to our national security is our debt…we have every responsibility to help eliminate that threat."
- Admiral Mike Mullen, Joint Chiefs of Staff

Strong America Now has proven that more than 25 percent of all federal spending, including Medicare, is waste.

  • Caterpillar, Xerox, most Fortune 500 companies and the US and Navy have used Lean Six Sigma to eliminate waste.
  • The Army eliminated 90 percent of the cost of the MRAP assembly, saving lives of our soldiers and marines.
  • Stanford Hospital eliminated 70 percent of the cost of cardiac surgery that was waste, which when removed, reduced mortality rates by 54 percent.
  • Every federal program contains at least 25 percent waste. Go to www.strongamericanow.org to view case studies which prove we can eliminate $500 billion per year of waste through higher efficiency.
  • An additional $500 billion per year can be cut by adopting the spending cuts of the bi-partisan Deficit Commission (Bowles- Simpson) plan, thus eliminating the $1 trillion deficit in 2017 and start paying down the debt in 2018.
  • If we don't eliminate the deficit, we will not have the resources to reduce taxes, curb unemployment, pay for defense and preserve Medicare, Social Security, etc.

How could you say Paul doesn't discuss waste? He is going to eliminate multiple government agencies and shut down hundreds of wasteful military bases. He's cutting a TRILLION dollars in his first year. You really think any of the other candidates are going to find that much waste to cut? Just because his plan doesn't fit into your box doesn't mean it isn't exponentially more effective than the others. "Cutting waste" sounds nice, but it's like putting bandaids on a gunshot wound. We need emergency surgery and Dr. Paul is the only one willing and capable.
